CDP and LLDP
Discovery let directly connected devices announce themselves: name, model, port, software and management address. CDP () works between Cisco devices; LLDP (link layer discovery protocol) is the vendor-neutral standard that phones, access points and other vendors speak. show cdp neighbors detail is often the fastest way to confirm a diagram, find which port an access point is on or discover a device nobody documented. Many teams run both inside the network.
