Data Visualization Best Practices

Chapter 1 · Practice 3 of 4

Use pie charts only for a few categories with one dominant share

From Start from the question and choose the chart

Why it matters

The Analysis Function limits pie charts to part-to-whole data with five categories or fewer, ideally where one category dominates, and notes they are hard to understand when magnified, which matters for accessibility.

If you do use one:

  • order sectors by size, starting the first at 12 o'clock;
  • label categories directly on the chart rather than in a legend;
  • show value labels when there are four categories or fewer.

When categories are similar in size, or there are many of them, a sorted bar chart makes the comparison much easier.

Avoid

  • Pie charts with many similar slices
  • 3D pie charts or exploded slices
