Chapter 2 · Practice 1 of 5
Solve one clear problem per post
Why it matters
The posts that keep getting read years later usually answer one specific question: how to fix an error, how to set something up, how two options compare. Posts that try to cover a whole topic tend to be shallow everywhere.
Before writing, finish this sentence: "After reading this, the reader will be able to..." If you need "and" more than once, split it into two posts.
Good examples:
- "Fix 'too many connections' errors in PostgreSQL with a connection pool."
- "Deploy a Next.js app to a VPS with a reverse proxy and HTTPS."
- "Choosing between server actions and API routes for form submissions."
Google's people-first content guidance asks whether a reader leaves feeling they have learned enough to achieve their goal. One clear problem makes that possible.
Do
- Write the "after reading this" sentence first
- Split posts that try to answer several questions
Avoid
- Overview posts that cover everything and solve nothing
