Chapter 1 · Practice 1 of 4
Describe the business result you deliver, not the languages you know
Why it matters
A client with a slow checkout page is not shopping for "React developer". They are shopping for someone who can make checkout faster so fewer customers drop off. Describing yourself by technology puts you in a crowd of thousands with the same keywords; describing yourself by the result you deliver puts you in a much smaller group.
Compare two one-line pitches:
| Technology first | Outcome first |
|---|---|
| Full stack developer, MERN, Next.js, AWS | I build booking and payment flows for clinics and salons, so they stop losing appointments to phone tag |
| Flutter developer with 3 years of experience | I turn restaurant ordering into a mobile app your staff can update without calling a developer |
The technology still matters, and you list it further down. But the first line a client reads should name who you help and what changes for them.
Do
- Lead with who you help and the result they get
- List your stack below the outcome, not instead of it
Avoid
- A headline that is only a list of frameworks
