What the report is
In-Demand Skills is a report Upwork publishes every year on which freelance skills clients are paying for and which are growing fastest. The 2026 edition, its sixth, was released on 4 February 2026. It is one of the few demand signals for freelance creative work that comes from real transactions rather than surveys.
How it was measured
Read the method before you quote a number. According to Upwork's release, the skills data comes from the Upwork Marketplace and is based on freelancer earnings across six work categories from 1 January to 31 December 2025, with demand originating in the United States. Only completed jobs were counted, and each skill needed at least 100,000 US dollars in total freelancer earnings in its category. Growth is 2025 earnings compared with 2024. So the figures describe what US clients paid for on one platform, not the whole world market.
What it found for creative work
- AI video generation and editing grew 329 percent, the fastest-growing skill in the report.
- AI image generation and editing grew 95 percent, second in the Design and Creative category, followed by logo design (+44 percent).
- Skills that explicitly reference AI grew 109 percent overall.
- At the same time, the top ten most in-demand Design and Creative skills were graphic design, video editing, presentation design, video production, image editing, product and industrial design, 3D animation, logo design, illustration and brand identity design.
That last point matters. Clients are not swapping editors and designers for a button; they are paying people who can use AI to deliver usable, publication-ready work. Upwork's own commentary says human expertise is still needed to direct and refine AI outputs.
How to read it without hype
- Big percentages often grow from a small base: AI video is growing fast, but plain video editing is still the larger market.
- US-originating demand on one marketplace is a useful signal, not a map of every country's clients.
- Look at the full report for the other categories, such as AI data annotation and AI integration, if you are choosing between earning paths.
Who it suits
Students and freelancers deciding which creative service to learn and sell, and anyone writing a proposal who wants a sourced, dated number rather than a guess.
