Chapter 01
What clients buy
The formats businesses pay for, how they judge them and what the demand data really says.
Demand signal
Also called In-Demand Skills 2026, demand data, job posts
- What
- Evidence that clients pay for a service: dated reports such as Upwork In-Demand Skills 2026 (AI video generation and editing +329 percent, AI images +95 percent, 2025 against 2024 earnings), plus live job posts and ads.
- Why
- It stops you building a service nobody buys, and gives you a sourced number for proposals instead of hype.
Watch out
Quoting a growth percentage without saying what was measured, where and when.
Ad creative
Also called ad creatives, paid social creative, ad variations
- What
- The image or video an advertiser runs in a paid placement, usually made in several sizes and versions so the best one can be found by testing.
- Why
- Brands need fresh creative constantly because ads wear out, which makes this steady, repeat work.
Watch out
Delivering one perfect ad when the client needed five variations to test.
Product photography
Also called product shots, packshot, lifestyle shot, product images
- What
- Images of a product for shops, marketplaces and ads: clean packshots on white plus lifestyle scenes showing it in use.
- Why
- Online sellers need many of them, and AI makes scenes cheap, as long as the product itself stays accurate.
Watch out
Generating the product from a text prompt, so the delivered image shows something that does not exist.
Thumbnail
Also called YouTube thumbnail, cover image
- What
- The small image that represents a video and decides whether people click. It must read instantly at tiny sizes on a phone.
- Why
- Channels need one for every upload and judge them by click-through rate, so good thumbnail makers get repeat work.
Watch out
Fine detail and long text that vanish at the size people actually see.
Brand kit
Also called brand guidelines, brand assets, style guide
- What
- A brand's logo files, colour codes, fonts, image style, tone of voice and examples of what to do and avoid.
- Why
- Every asset should match it. Asking for it, or building it, is the first step of consistent work.
Watch out
Starting without one and guessing the brand colour from a blurry screenshot.
Creative testing
Also called A/B testing, CTR, click-through rate, hook rate, conversion
- What
- Running several versions of an ad, each changing one thing such as the hook or image, and keeping the winner by numbers like click-through rate and conversions.
- Why
- It is why clients want variations and how they will judge your work.
Watch out
Calling a version better because you like it, when the client judges by numbers.
