Chapter 02
The honest picture
Pay, project gaps, contractor status and wellbeing, as they really are, before you put in time.
Pay that varies
- What
- Platforms set rates by expertise, project difficulty and location, and show the rate before you accept a project. Some pay per hour, others per task.
- Why
- There is no single rate for this work, so judge each project on its own shown rate, not on figures from ads or videos.
Watch out
Believing headline pay figures, which are often the top of a range, from another country or a closed project.
Effective hourly rate
- What
- What you actually earned divided by all the hours you spent, including reading guidelines, unpaid tests and rework.
- Why
- On per-task projects it shows whether a project is worth your time, and whether rushing is costing you quality.
- Example
- You earn 30 dollars from tasks that took 4 hours, plus 2 unpaid hours reading the guideline: 30 divided by 6 is 5 dollars an hour, not 7.50.
Project-based work
Also called empty queue, EQ
- What
- Work opens when a client needs data and closes when they have enough. Weeks with no tasks, often called an empty queue, are normal.
- Why
- Income can drop to zero without you doing anything wrong, so treat it as flexible extra income, not a salary.
Watch out
Giving up a job, a degree or other income after one good month.
Independent contractor
Also called contractor, freelancer
- What
- You work for the platform as a contractor, not an employee: no paid leave, health cover or pension, and you handle your own tax.
- Why
- It explains the flexibility and the risks, and why platforms can end projects or accounts with little notice.
Sensitive content work
Also called content moderation, wellbeing
- What
- Projects reviewing harmful material, such as violence, hate or self-harm, so models learn to refuse or flag it. Good platforms warn in advance and offer support.
- Why
- It can affect your sleep and mood. Decide your limits before you join such a project.
Watch out
Pushing through long sessions because the task pays, then carrying it home.
