What Outlier is
Outlier is a platform run by Scale AI that connects contractors with AI companies that need human feedback to improve large language models. In its own words, contributors "generate prompts, rank AI outputs, improve model responses, or complete other tasks". It is one of the larger names in AI trainer work and recruits across coding, STEM subjects, languages and other fields.
Who it is for
According to its FAQ (October 2026), you need at least an associate degree, and some projects ask for a bachelor's, master's or PhD. Screening is described as selective. To apply you need a valid ID and a mobile phone from your country of residence, a current CV and a LinkedIn profile showing your education and experience. You work as an independent contractor, not an employee, and Outlier does not sponsor visas.
How joining works
The FAQ describes three steps:
- Platform onboarding: account setup, choosing your areas of expertise, skill screenings and identity verification. It says this usually takes 30 to 90 minutes.
- Project qualification: you read a project's guidelines and complete assessment tasks for it.
- Tasking: paid work on that project.
Projects vary in length, and the FAQ says available projects "may not always match your specific field". Expect gaps between projects.
Pay and payment
Rates vary by expertise, project complexity and location, and you see the rate before you start a project. Payments are processed weekly on Tuesdays for the previous week, through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer. PayPal cannot receive money in some countries, Pakistan among them, so check which of these works where you live before you start.
Honest advice
- Treat the qualification tasks like an open-book exam: read the whole guideline, then work slowly and exactly.
- Never use an AI tool to do tasks unless the project explicitly allows it. Platforms check, and accounts are removed for it.
- Never pay anyone who offers to "get you onto Outlier" or sells accounts. Joining is free, and a bought or shared account breaks the rules.
Best for: graduates and specialists, including programmers, who want project-based AI trainer work alongside study or a job.
