Chapter 03
German and EU work routes
The Opportunity Card, the EU Blue Card and degree recognition, as the official pages described them in October 2026.
Opportunity Card
Also called Chancenkarte
- What
- Germany's job-seeker permit since June 2024: up to a year to search, by full recognition of your qualification or by at least 6 points with German A1 or English B2.
- Why
- It lets you search on the ground, with up to 20 hours a week of work or trial work allowed.
- Example
- As of 2026 the proof of funds is 1,091 euros a month, usually in a blocked account.
Watch out
Spending the year on side jobs instead of the search.
EU Blue Card
Also called Blaue Karte EU, Blue Card
- What
- A residence and work permit for people with a recognised or comparable degree and a job paying at least a set salary.
- Why
- In Germany it allows family to join, lets partners work and leads to settlement after 27 months, or 21 with German at B1.
- Example
- Germany 2026: 50,700 euros standard; 45,934.20 euros for shortage occupations such as IT and recent graduates, with Federal Employment Agency approval.
Watch out
Using another EU country's threshold, or last year's German one.
Blocked account
Also called Sperrkonto
- What
- A German bank account you fund in advance and can only draw from in fixed monthly amounts, used as proof of funds.
- Why
- The Opportunity Card and some other visas require proof you can support yourself.
Watch out
Choosing a provider without checking that the embassy accepts it.
anabin
- What
- The German database of foreign universities and degrees run by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB); "H+" means the institution is recognised.
- Why
- If your university is H+ and your degree is listed as equivalent, that is often enough for a Blue Card or skilled worker permit.
Watch out
Checking only the university and not whether your specific degree type is listed.
ZAB statement of comparability
Also called Zeugnisbewertung, statement of comparability
- What
- A paid document from the ZAB that states what a foreign degree corresponds to in Germany.
- Why
- You need it when anabin does not clearly show your degree as equivalent, and it takes weeks, so apply before job hunting.
Watch out
Applying for the Blue Card first and only then discovering the degree needs a statement.
Germany visa table
- What
- The main German routes for engineers, with the official sites, as read in October 2026.
- Why
- One place to check thresholds and where the rules live before you trust a summary.

Germany recognition checklist
- What
- The steps to show your degree is recognised or comparable for a Blue Card or the Opportunity Card.
- Why
- Recognition gaps are the most common delay for Germany, and a statement takes weeks.
1. Find your university in anabin: H+ ?
2. Find your degree type: listed as equivalent?
3. Both yes: print the anabin entries
4. Otherwise: apply to the ZAB for a statement
of comparability (weeks; fee on zab.kmk.org)
5. Opportunity Card points route: degree
recognised in the country that awarded it
6. Attest or apostille the degree at homeWatch out
Checking only the university and not the degree type.
