The problem small businesses have with bookings and slow sites
Most small businesses near any university, from salons and physiotherapists to tutors, photographers and repair shops, still take bookings by phone or WhatsApp. The owner answers calls while working, writes slots in a notebook, double-books on busy days and loses customers who message after hours and get no reply. Their website, if they have one, is slow on phones, out of date and does not show up when someone nearby searches for the service.
Owners rarely know whether their site works for customers using a keyboard or a screen reader, or why competitors appear in local results and they do not.
What already exists and the gap
- Calendly and Cal.com handle scheduling; Cal.com is open source and self-hostable, with calendar sync, time zone detection and reminders.
- Square Appointments, Setmore and Fresha are booking tools aimed at salons and service businesses.
- Google Business Profile lets customers find a local business and, in some regions and categories, book through partners.
The tools exist. The gap is that small owners cannot set them up well: they sign up, never configure buffers or staff hours, and the booking link sits unused on a slow page. This project is the setup, integration and evidence: a site that is fast and findable, with booking configured around how the business actually works.
What you build
Treat it as a client project for one real business.
- Discovery: a written brief, sitemap and content plan agreed with the owner.
- Design and build: key pages on a staging copy the owner reviews, on the platform you are learning.
- Booking: an embedded booking flow with service durations, buffers, staff hours, a cancellation policy and reminders, delivered to the owner's calendar and phone.
- Findability: titles, descriptions, LocalBusiness structured data, Search Console and a consistent business profile.
- Launch and handover: checklist, redirects, backup, training and a guide.
Users: the owner, staff who manage their own availability, and customers who book.
The technically interesting part
The interesting part is making the booking rules match reality and proving the site got better. Double-booking usually comes from missing rules: a 45-minute service needs a 15-minute cleanup, two staff have different hours, one service needs a specific room. Model these in the booking tool and test edge cases: a booking across a break, two customers taking the last slot at once, a cancellation inside the notice window.
On quality, measure before you change anything: Core Web Vitals on mobile for three templates, an automated and manual accessibility audit, and indexing status. Then explain which changes (image sizes, fonts, removed plugins, semantic HTML) made the largest difference.
How to evaluate it
- Performance: PageSpeed mobile scores and Core Web Vitals for three templates, before and after.
- Accessibility: WAVE errors and a keyboard-only booking walkthrough, before and after.
- Search: pages indexed and search impressions in Search Console over four to six weeks.
- Bookings: share of bookings arriving online versus phone, from the owner's records, for four to six weeks after launch.
- Double bookings: count before and after, from the owner's notebook.
Be honest about what a short study cannot show.
Suggested plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: find the business, baseline measurements, brief and content plan.
- Weeks 3 to 6: design and staging build.
- Weeks 7 to 8: booking configuration and edge case testing.
- Week 9: SEO, accessibility, launch checklist and launch.
- Weeks 10 to 15: training, handover, measurement and report.
Path to a product
The first customer is the business you build for, and the report is your sales material for the next one. A fixed build fee plus a monthly care plan (updates, backups, small edits) is how many freelance web developers earn steadily. If you notice the same booking rules across many salons or clinics, a niche template with booking preconfigured is a small product.
Scope warning
Do not build a booking engine from scratch. Do not take payments in version one unless the owner already needs deposits. Do not redesign the brand. Get written permission to publish the case study, collect only the customer data the booking needs, and publish a privacy notice.

This project succeeds when the measurements are honest and the owner can run the site without you. Tauseef can help you find and scope the client, choose the platform and booking tool, and design the before and after report. If you are new here, create a free account first.
Ideas and guidance, not finished projects
These are project ideas and scoping guidance, published free for students to use as a starting point. I do not build, write, or sell final-year projects, and I do not complete coursework for anyone. Take an idea, make it yours, and build it.
