The problem
Laboratory safety is taught through a slide deck and a signature. Students then encounter real hazards having never practised the response, because practising it for real is dangerous and expensive.

An interactive laboratory, several complete procedures with consequences, error detection, and an instructor dashboard.
What separates this from a demonstration
Assessment. A virtual laboratory you can walk around is a technology demo. One that records that a student added water to acid, skipped eye protection and reached across a flame, and reports the pattern across a whole cohort to the instructor, is a training tool. Build the assessment layer first.
The most valuable output
Cohort level error data. Telling an instructor that seventy percent of students got a particular step wrong tells them what to teach differently, and no existing method gives them that.
The evaluation you must do
Test with real users, at least ten, and measure something. Task completion, errors on a second attempt, or a knowledge check before and after. Virtual reality projects are unusually prone to being submitted with no evaluation beyond it works, and the evaluation is what makes it research.
The constraint to design around
Motion sickness. Standing interaction within arm's reach, teleport movement rather than smooth locomotion, and a stable frame rate. A brilliant simulation that makes users ill has failed.
Scope warning
Three procedures done convincingly beats ten done shallowly.
