None is best for everyone. Service companies hire the most freshers and train them at scale. Global capability centres (GCCs) are growing and hire more freshers than before, with a higher bar and more AI and data skills expected. Product companies offer ownership but hire fewer freshers. Choose on the team, the learning and the work, and know you can move after two years.
What people tell me
I am in my final year of BTech in India. My friends are split: some are taking service company offers, some are only applying to GCCs, and a few are trying for product startups. Seniors say service companies are a trap, others say GCCs are the new safe option. I have one service company offer already. Which kind of company is actually best for a fresher in 2026?
A composite of the messages behind this question, with personal details left out.
Key takeaways
- Service companies: largest fresher intake and structured training, but project quality varies widely.
- GCCs: the fastest-growing part of Indian tech hiring in 2026, with a higher bar and more AI and data roles.
- Product companies: ownership and depth, but fewer fresher roles and higher selection bars.
- The team and what you will actually work on matter more than the company type.
- Taking a service offer now and moving later is a normal, solid path.
What each one is
- Service companies build and run software for client companies. They hire freshers in large numbers through campus and off-campus drives.
- Global capability centres (GCCs) are the Indian engineering, data and operations hubs of companies headquartered abroad, such as banks, retailers and software companies. They work on the parent company's own systems.
- Product companies build and sell their own software, from startups to large tech firms.
What the 2026 numbers say
Business Today reported in July 2026 that GCC hiring in India was projected at about 510,000 jobs in 2026, with 64% of new GCC roles requiring AI, data science or intelligent automation skills. Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 showed IT and software services hiring down year on year while GCC hiring was up. GCCs are growing, but most of their hiring is still for experienced people. The full breakdown is in How to get a job at a GCC in India.
Side by side for a fresher
| Service company | GCC | Product company | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresher intake | Largest | Growing, selective | Smallest |
| Training | Structured, at scale | Varies by centre | Usually on the job |
| Type of work | Client projects, varies widely | One company's systems, strong process | Your own product, high ownership |
| Selection bar | Aptitude, basics, communication | DSA, one strong language, SQL, often AI/data skills | DSA, projects, depth |
| Risk | Bench time or a support project | Can be narrow if the team is | Startup instability |
How to choose
- Ask about the team, not the logo. What will you build? Who reviews your code? What did last year's freshers learn? A great service project beats a dull GCC team, and the reverse is also true.
- Do not reject a solid offer while waiting for a perfect one. If you hold a service offer, keep it while applying elsewhere.
- Plan the second move. Many engineers start in services and move to GCCs or product companies after two or three years. How do I switch from a service-based to a product-based company? shows how.
- Prepare for the higher bar anyway. DSA patterns, one strong language, SQL and one honest AI or data feature open all three doors. The DSA and problem solving roadmap, SQL and databases roadmap and AI engineering roadmap cover these.
Questions to ask in any offer conversation
- What will my first project be, and what stack does it use?
- How long do freshers usually spend in training or on the bench?
- Who reviews my code, and how often?
- How do people move between teams after a year?
- What did the last batch of freshers go on to do?
If the answers are vague, ask someone who joined last year. Their answers matter more than the company's brochure.
A word on "trap"
Calling service companies a trap is unfair. The trap is staying two years without learning anything you can show. In any company, keep building visible skills and you stay free to move.
