What it is
Adobe's colour palette generator, long known as Adobe Color and now presented as part of Adobe Express, is a free web tool for building colour schemes. You start from a base colour, an uploaded image or the interactive colour wheel, then apply a colour harmony: monochromatic, complementary, analogous, triadic and others. Alongside the wheel it offers a contrast checker, tools to extract a palette or gradient from an image, and a preview of how the palette appears to people with different types of colour blindness.
Why it matters for AI creative work
AI generators pick colours for you, and they are rarely the client's colours. Every asset for a brand should use the same palette, and text must stay readable against whatever the generator put behind it. This tool helps with three common jobs:
- Turning a client's logo or product photo into a palette you can reuse across ads, thumbnails and video titles.
- Checking contrast so headlines and captions are readable, including for people with low vision.
- Building a mood for a campaign that still sits inside the brand's colours.
How to use it well
- Start from the brand's existing colours, given as HEX codes such as #1A73E8, and only add accent colours with the client's agreement.
- Extract a palette from a reference image the client loves, then compare it with their brand colours.
- Test every text and background pair with the contrast checker before delivery.
- Save the palette with the client's name and paste the HEX codes into your brief and brand kit.
- When grading AI video clips, use the same palette as your reference for skin tones, shadows and highlights.
Limits to know
Colours look different on different screens; test on a cheap phone in daylight as well as on your laptop. Print needs separate colour settings, so ask the printer before sending files.
Who it suits
Anyone making visuals for a brand, from thumbnails to video ads, and especially beginners who choose colours by instinct.
