Australia Awards Scholarships

What it is
Australia Awards Scholarships are long-term development awards funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. They let people from participating countries study full time at participating Australian universities and some vocational institutions, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, with the aim of building skills and links that benefit their home countries.
What it covers (as of 2026-09)
According to DFAT's official pages, the scholarships generally cover full tuition, a return economy airfare, an establishment allowance, a contribution to living expenses paid fortnightly, and an Introductory Academic Program before study starts. Other support may apply; read the current policy handbook.
Eligibility and conditions
- You must be a citizen of a participating country and meet that country's specific criteria, which often prioritise certain fields, sectors or groups.
- Awardees must leave Australia for at least two years after completing the award, or repay its full cost.
- Each country has its own profile listing priorities and whether work experience is expected.
Timing
For the intake starting in 2027, DFAT's schedule shows applications opened on 1 February 2026 and closed on 30 April 2026, through the official online system, with some countries using their own portals. Dates change each year, so check the opening and closing dates page for your country.
How to apply well
- Check that your country participates and read its country profile.
- Choose a course that fits your country's priority areas and your career plan.
- Write concretely about how the degree will help you contribute at home.
- Prepare for interviews and English testing where your country requires them.
Is it worth it?
For eligible applicants who plan to build a career at home, yes: it is fully funded and well supported. If you intend to stay and work in Australia after studying, the two-year rule makes it the wrong choice.
