What to study
Expect scenario questions on choosing between services: S3 storage classes and partitioning, Glue jobs and the Data Catalog, Athena, Redshift, EMR, Kinesis Data Streams and Amazon Data Firehose, Lambda, Step Functions and Amazon MWAA, Lake Formation permissions, IAM, encryption with KMS, and monitoring with CloudWatch. Cost optimisation appears throughout.
Free preparation from AWS: the exam guide, official practice questions and courses on AWS Skill Builder, and the AWS documentation for each service.
Is it worth your time?
It can be, with the right expectations. A certification does not replace a portfolio, and hiring managers check that you can explain real work. It helps most when you are moving into data engineering from another role, when employers in your market list it in job ads, or when an employer pays for it. For a student with no experience, a well-documented AWS pipeline project usually matters more; the exam is a good second step that forces broad coverage.
Scam and fee warnings
Only book through AWS Certification and Pearson VUE. Avoid dumps that claim to be real exam questions: using them breaks the certification agreement and can get your certification revoked. Be wary of paid bootcamps that promise a job with the certificate.
Common questions
Do I need the Cloud Practitioner first? No, there are no prerequisites, though it is a gentle start if AWS is new to you.
How long does preparation take? It varies with experience. With hands-on AWS work, a few weeks of focused study is common; without it, build a project first.
