AWS Documentation

The official home of every AWS user guide, API reference and CLI reference, plus decision guides that compare services such as Fargate and Lambda. The IAM, VPC, EC2 and S3 user guides are the most reliable way to learn how AWS really behaves, and they are free.

What it is

AWS Documentation is the official reference for Amazon Web Services. From one home page you reach the user guide, developer guide, API reference and CLI reference for each service, plus SDK documentation for the main programming languages, tutorials, a code example library and decision guides such as "Fargate or Lambda?" and "SQS, SNS or EventBridge?". Every other AWS course, book and video is ultimately a summary of these pages.

Is it worth reading when there are so many courses?

Yes, once you know roughly what a service does. Courses are good at giving you the big picture quickly, but they age: services add features, defaults change and limits move. The user guides are updated alongside the services, so when a course and the docs disagree, the docs win. Reading them is also a skill in itself. Cloud engineers spend a large part of every week in documentation, and being comfortable finding the right page quickly is one of the things that separates a junior who needs help from one who does not.

Where to start

Do not try to read it front to back. For a cloud engineering path, these guides pay off first:

  • The IAM User Guide, especially the pages on policies, policy evaluation logic and security best practices.
  • The Amazon VPC User Guide for subnets, route tables, internet and NAT gateways, and security groups.
  • The Amazon EC2 and AWS Lambda guides for compute, and the Amazon S3 and Amazon RDS guides for storage and databases.
  • The AWS Billing and Cost Management guide for budgets, Cost Explorer and cost allocation tags.
  • The AWS CloudFormation User Guide if you want to read AWS's native infrastructure as code format.

How to use it well

Keep the relevant guide open while you build, rather than reading it in advance. When you hit an error, search the service guide and the troubleshooting section before searching the wider web. Read the "quotas" or "limits" page of any service before you design around it, and the pricing section before you leave anything running. The decision guides are especially useful when you are unsure which service fits a job.

Free or paid

The documentation is completely free and needs no account. Following the tutorials creates real resources, which may be billed outside the free plan, so set a budget alert first and delete what you create.

Common questions

Is it good for complete beginners? It is precise rather than gentle. Start with a structured course such as AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, then switch to the docs as your main reference.

Does it help with certifications? Yes. Exam questions follow the documented behaviour of services, so the docs are the tie-breaker whenever a practice question and a course disagree.
