What it is

BBC Learning English is the BBC's free site for people learning English, running (in various forms) since 1943. The homepage lets you start by choosing your level, and offers short series that are updated every week, including 6 Minute English, Real Easy English, The English We Speak and Learning English from the News. There is also an archive of English at Work, a drama series set in an office that covers phrases for meetings, emails, negotiating and small talk.

Why it matters in a first tech job

Many engineers work in English as a second language, especially in remote teams or companies with international clients. Technical vocabulary usually comes quickly because it is the same everywhere. What takes longer is the everyday language of work: giving an update in standup, disagreeing politely in a meeting, asking for help without sounding unsure, writing a clear message to a product manager, and understanding colleagues who speak fast or use idioms.

Short daily practice helps more than occasional long study. Six minutes of listening on a commute, repeated for a few months, noticeably improves comprehension and confidence.

How to use it

  • Pick your level on the site and stay with one series for a few weeks.
  • Use 6 Minute English or Learning English from the News for listening practice; read the transcript after listening.
  • Watch English at Work for office phrases, and note the ones you could use in your own meetings.
  • Keep a small phrase list for your job: "Could you say more about...", "I have a concern about...", "I will have an update by...". Use one new phrase in a real conversation each week.

Pair it with the free Google Technical Writing courses for written English in a technical setting.

Free vs paid

Free. There is no paid tier.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if English is not your first language and you want to be more comfortable speaking up at work. It will not teach you engineering vocabulary, and it is not a substitute for real practice in meetings, but it builds the base that makes those meetings easier.

Common questions

Is British English a problem if my team uses American English? No. The differences are small and colleagues understand both.

Is there an app? Check the site for current apps and podcasts; availability varies by country.

Should I worry about my accent? No. Clear, structured speech matters far more than accent in engineering teams.
