What it is
bpmn.io is a set of web-based toolkits for BPMN, DMN and forms, built and maintained by Camunda and open source contributors. Its online demo is a BPMN 2.0 editor that runs in your browser: you can create a new diagram, open an existing one from your computer and download it as a standard BPMN 2.0 file. The same bpmn-js toolkit powers modelling in Camunda's own products.
Why it is useful for business analysts
Process maps are one of the first things a business analyst produces. BPMN, Business Process Model and Notation, is the standard notation for them and is also published as ISO/IEC 19510. Drawing in a tool built for BPMN, rather than a general drawing app, keeps you honest: the palette offers real BPMN elements, so you learn the difference between a task, an event and a gateway by using them.
What you can model:
- Events: start, intermediate and end events, such as a timer or an incoming message.
- Tasks and sub-processes: the work done by people or systems.
- Gateways: exclusive, parallel and inclusive decisions and joins.
- Pools and lanes: who does each step, across departments or organisations.
- Message flows: communication between separate participants, such as a customer and a bank.
How to use it for practice
- Pick a process you can observe, such as leave requests or refunds.
- Draw the as-is process with one lane per role, and mark delays and rework loops with text annotations.
- Ask someone who does the work to check it.
- Draw the to-be process and compare the two.
- Download the
.bpmnfile and export an image for your portfolio.
Free or paid?
The demo is free and needs no account. Camunda suggests its own free account if you want to save, organise and share diagrams with teammates. The bpmn-js library is open source on GitHub under bpmn.io's licence, which is worth reading if you plan to embed it in software.
Limits to know
- The demo focuses on BPMN; for use case, state or data diagrams use a general tool such as draw.io.
- Save your files yourself. Do not treat the browser tab as storage.
- Most business readers need only a handful of BPMN symbols. Use the simplest set that tells the story.
Common questions
Do I need to learn all of BPMN? No. Events, tasks, gateways, sequence flows and lanes cover most business process maps.
Can other tools open my file? BPMN 2.0 files follow a standard XML format that many modelling tools can import.
Best for: students and junior analysts learning process modelling with the real notation.

Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
