What it is
Cloud FinOps: Collaborative, Real-Time Cloud Value Decision Making is the book most FinOps practitioners read first. Its authors, J.R. Storment and Mike Fuller, are long-time leaders in the FinOps community, and the book shaped much of the language the FinOps Framework uses. The second edition was published by O'Reilly in January 2023 and adds chapters on forecasting, adopting FinOps, partnering with engineering, sustainability and connecting FinOps to other frameworks.
What it covers
- Why the cloud's variable spend model needs a new way of working between engineering and finance.
- The FinOps lifecycle of inform, optimise and operate, with stories from real companies.
- Allocation, tagging strategy, showback and chargeback.
- Rate optimisation: how reservations and commitment discounts work and how to manage them as a portfolio.
- Usage optimisation, unit economics and metrics that connect spend to business value.
- Forecasting, budgeting and building a FinOps culture and team.
Is it still current?
The principles and the people side have aged well. Product names and some discount details have changed since 2023 (for example newer Savings Plans types and the FOCUS billing format), and AI spend gets little space. Read the book for the thinking and the provider docs for current features.
How to read it
Read the opening chapters and the allocation and unit economics chapters closely, skim the rest, and come back to the commitments chapters when you reach the rate optimisation stage of the roadmap. Keep notes in your own words; the FinOps Certified Practitioner exam uses much of the same vocabulary.
Free or paid
Paid. It is part of the O'Reilly learning subscription, which some universities and employers provide, and an audiobook version exists. If cost is a barrier, the free FinOps Framework pages and Introduction to FinOps course cover the core ideas.
Best for: people committing to FinOps as a career who want the reasoning behind the framework, not only its list of capabilities.
