What it is
Content Credentials are a way of attaching provenance to digital content: a record of where a file came from and how it was edited. The specification is a project hosted by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), and the site says it has grown to a collaboration of hundreds of companies, led by Microsoft, Adobe, Intel, BBC, Truepic, Sony, Publicis Groupe, OpenAI, Google, Meta and Amazon. Files that carry credentials can show a small pin that reveals how they were made and their editing history.
The site explains the idea, lists how credentials are implemented today and offers a verify tool where you can upload a file and inspect its credentials.
Why it matters for AI creative work
Many AI tools now attach credentials or similar signals to their outputs. Adobe Firefly, for example, says its outputs include Content Credentials indicating AI was used. Platforms read these signals: Meta has said it applies its "AI info" label when it detects industry-standard indicators, and TikTok has used Content Credentials to label AI-generated content uploaded from elsewhere. So the files you deliver may be labelled automatically, whatever you or your client intended.
What this means in practice
- Expect labels. If a client's ad is made with AI tools, it may be labelled. Tell the client before they upload, not after.
- Do not strip credentials to hide AI use. It is deceptive, may break tool or platform rules, and labels can come from other signals anyway, such as invisible watermarks like Google's SynthID.
- Use it as proof. For your own original work, credentials can help show what you made and how.
How to learn from it
- Read the About and Glossary pages.
- Upload one file from each tool you use to the verify tool and see what it records.
- Note in your delivery checklist which of your tools add credentials.
