What it is
Databricks is a data and AI platform built on Apache Spark and Delta Lake, available on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Databricks Free Edition is a permanently free workspace for students, hobbyists and people learning data skills. It replaced the older Community Edition. Databricks Academy offers free self-paced training that pairs with it.
What you can do with it
According to Databricks, Free Edition includes collaborative notebooks with Python and SQL, data engineering and ETL workflows (jobs and pipelines), SQL warehouses and dashboards, machine learning tools and the Databricks Assistant. Compute and warehouse sizes are smaller than paid workspaces and fair use limits apply, which is fine for learning datasets.
Limits to know
- Free Edition is for personal use only. Its terms prohibit commercial use, so do not run client or employer work on it.
- Smaller compute means big jobs will be slow or fail. Practise with datasets of a few gigabytes.
- Features and limits can change; check the Free Edition page for the current list.
Databricks Academy
Databricks Academy has free self-paced courses, from SQL basics to data engineering with Delta Lake and Lakeflow, and on to machine learning. The data engineering courses walk through creating Delta tables, ingesting files, building a bronze, silver and gold (medallion) pipeline and scheduling it as a job, with follow-along demos you can run in Free Edition. Databricks certification exams are paid and separate from the free training.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, particularly for the Spark and lakehouse parts of a data engineering roadmap. Setting up Spark on your own cluster teaches operations, but Free Edition lets you focus on writing correct, efficient PySpark and SQL and on the lakehouse pattern that many employers use. Databricks is common in job descriptions on all three major clouds, including Azure Databricks.
How to use it well
- Take one Academy data engineering course and do every demo yourself.
- Then build your own medallion pipeline on a public dataset: raw files in bronze, cleaned and deduplicated tables in silver, business aggregates in gold.
- Keep your notebooks in a Git repository so the work is visible in your portfolio.
Common questions
Is it really free? Databricks states that Free Edition is provided at no cost and is perpetually free to use, as of 2026-09, subject to fair use limits.
Does it teach me Databricks-specific tools or general skills? Both. Spark, SQL, Delta Lake and the medallion pattern are general; some features, such as Unity Catalog and Lakeflow, are Databricks products.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
