What it is
DaVinci Resolve is a professional video application from Blackmagic Design that combines editing, colour correction, visual effects and audio post-production. It comes in a free version and a paid DaVinci Resolve Studio with extra features. Its colour tools are an industry standard, and the free version is enough for most social, ad and explainer work.
Official training
Blackmagic Design publishes official training videos and books on its training page, and runs a certification programme with certified trainers and training centres. The books include:
- The Beginner's Guide to DaVinci Resolve 20: a project-based introduction to editing, colour grading, Fairlight audio and Fusion effects. Start here.
- Guides on colour correction, Fairlight audio and Fusion visual effects for when you want depth.
Why it matters for AI video
AI generators produce short clips, usually a few seconds each, that differ slightly in colour and look. The real work happens in the editor:
- choosing the best seconds of each clip and cutting them to a rhythm
- colour-matching clips from different generations so they look like one shoot
- mixing voice, music and sound effects at the right levels
- adding captions, brand elements and titles
- exporting the right format for each platform from the Deliver page
An editor who can do this well can make average clips into a good ad.
How to learn it
- Work through the beginner guide with your own footage or AI clips rather than only the sample project.
- Learn keyboard shortcuts for cutting and trimming early; speed matters on client deadlines.
- Make an export preset for each platform you deliver to: 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5, and 16:9.
- Save a project template per client with their fonts, colours and title styles.
Limits to know
It needs a reasonably capable computer, especially for colour and effects work. Some AI and performance features are only in the paid Studio version.
Who it suits
Anyone serious about video work, including people in India, where CapCut is not available.
Pair it with on Sefism
- Follow the AI video and design for clients roadmap and keep its cheat sheet open while you work.
- For platforms, proposals, pricing and getting paid, use the Freelancing roadmap.
Best for: turning AI clips into finished, colour-matched, well-mixed videos.
