What it is

ElevenLabs is one of the best-known AI voice platforms. It turns written scripts into natural-sounding speech in many voices and languages, translates and dubs existing audio, and can clone a voice from recordings when the voice's owner agrees. It also offers sound effects and music generation, and its voices appear inside other creative tools, including Adobe Firefly and Pika.

Why it matters for client video

A clear voiceover makes cheap visuals feel finished. For explainers, product videos and ads, a good AI voice can replace a recording session, and dubbing lets one video reach Urdu, Arabic, Hindi or French speakers without a reshoot.

Read the plan terms first

This is the most important point for freelancers. ElevenLabs' terms of use, as read in October 2026, say that users on the free plan may use the services only for non-commercial purposes, while users on a paid subscription may use them commercially. Its pricing page lists a commercial licence on paid plans. So a client voiceover made on a free account is not covered. Check the current terms and pricing page yourself before quoting; plans and credits change.

Consent and limits

  • Cloning a voice needs the owner's clear permission, ideally in writing, saying where and for how long it will be used.
  • Never clone a celebrity, politician or anyone who has not agreed, and never make a real person appear to say something they did not.
  • Its prohibited use policy applies to everything you make, on any plan.

How to use it well

  • Keep a pronunciation list for brand names, places and local words, and test them early.
  • Match pace to the edit: short ads need tighter delivery than explainers.
  • Mix the voice clearly above any music, and export both a full mix and a voice-only track for the client.
  • Save the voice, settings and script for each client so a later version sounds the same.

Who it suits

Video freelancers who need voiceovers, translated versions or consistent narration across a series.
