Europass CV
The European Union's free online CV builder and standard format, sometimes requested by European universities and scholarship programmes. Use it when a programme asks for it; otherwise a clean academic CV is usually better.

What it is
Europass is a set of free European Union tools for presenting skills and qualifications in a way that is understood across Europe. Its CV builder lets you create a CV online in a standard structure, in many languages, and download it as a PDF. It also offers a profile where you can store your details, and templates for cover letters.
When you need it
Some European universities, Erasmus Mundus consortia and scholarship programmes ask applicants to submit a CV in Europass format, or suggest it. If a programme asks for it, use it exactly as requested, since committees may compare applications side by side. When no format is specified, a well-organised academic CV, led by education, research and projects, often reads better than the Europass template, which can become long and form-like.
How to use it well
- Create a profile and fill in education with exact dates, grades and thesis titles.
- Add research experience and projects with one or two concrete lines each, not long descriptions.
- Use the language section honestly, with the European levels, and match any test scores you hold.
- Remove empty or irrelevant sections; the builder allows many sections you do not need.
- Export to PDF and read it once as a committee member would: can they find your degree, grades and research in ten seconds?
Is it worth it?
It is worth using when asked, and it is free and quick. Its weakness is that the standard layout does not highlight research strength, so avoid it for programmes and supervisors who expect an academic CV. Keep both versions ready.

Common questions
Will using Europass help my chances? Not by itself. Content matters; format matters only when a programme asks for a specific one.
Should I include a photo? Only if the programme asks for one. Many do not.
Can I use it outside Europe? You can, but most universities elsewhere expect a standard academic CV.
Does it replace a motivation letter? No. The CV lists facts; the motivation letter or statement of purpose explains why you are applying and why you fit. Programmes that ask for Europass usually ask for both.
