What it is

Figma for Education is Figma's programme for schools, students and teachers. Its official page states that Figma and FigJam are free for students, educators and schools, with no hidden upgrades. As of 2026-09, the FAQ on that page says:

  • Teachers and students over 13 can sign up for the self-serve Education plan at figma.com/education/apply, verify their education status and create an Education team, which gives free access to the Figma Professional tier.
  • Higher education institutions and bootcamps qualify for free Professional access; K-12 districts qualify for free Enterprise access through a school agreement, and schools with students under 13 must contact Figma and sign its terms for schools.

Who qualifies

According to the official FAQ (as of 2026-09), you must be a student or educator in a structured classroom, virtual or in person. The examples Figma lists include high schools, universities, post-graduate institutions, trade schools, polytechnics, colleges, online courses, bootcamps, workshops, and design and coding academies. Rules can change, so read the current FAQ on the official page before applying.

How to get it

  1. Create a Figma account, ideally with your student or teacher email address.
  2. Verify that you are a student or educator through the "Get verified" link on the education page.
  3. Create, upgrade or join an Education team to get the Professional features.

Why it matters

The free Starter plan is enough to learn the basics. The Education plan removes the limits that matter once you build real projects: unlimited files and projects in a team, team libraries for components and more advanced prototyping and Dev Mode features. That lets you practise the same workflows a product team uses.

If you do not qualify

Use the free Starter plan. It includes the core editor, components, auto layout, styles and prototyping, which covers most of what a learner needs. Check the official pricing page for current limits and paid plans.

Things to watch

  • Use it for learning and class projects. For paid client work, read Figma's terms, as education plans are meant for educational use.
  • Verification can take time; apply before a course starts rather than the night before a deadline.
  • Beware of websites selling "cheap Figma accounts". Use only figma.com.

Common questions

Is there a catch? Figma's page says there is no freemium or hidden upgrade for eligible students and educators. Eligibility is the main condition.

Do I lose my files when I graduate? Check the current FAQ and your team settings before your status ends, and export or move work you want to keep.
