Figma Learn
Figma's official learning hub: product documentation, step-by-step guides and free courses for Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam and the rest of the Figma tools. Because Figma ships changes often, this is the most reliable place to learn features such as auto layout, variants and variables.

What it is
Figma Learn is the help centre and learning site run by Figma at help.figma.com. It combines three things: product documentation for every feature, guides that explain how to use them, and courses, tutorials and projects for learners. It covers Figma Design, Dev Mode, FigJam, Figma Slides and Figma's newer tools.
Why use it instead of random tutorials
Figma changes quickly. Features such as variables, component properties and Dev Mode have changed several times, and many video tutorials show outdated panels. Figma Learn is updated by Figma itself, so the screenshots and steps match the current app. When a tutorial elsewhere does not match what you see, check Figma Learn first.
Where to start
- The beginner course and "get started" material if you have never used Figma.
- The Guide to auto layout, which is worth reading end to end once, because auto layout is the base of good files.
- The pages on components, variants and component properties once you start building reusable elements.
- The variables pages when you set up colour themes such as light and dark mode.
- The Dev Mode pages, whether you are a designer preparing handoff or a developer inspecting a file.
Time needed
You can learn the basics in a weekend. Becoming fluent with auto layout, components and variables usually takes a few weeks of building real screens alongside the documentation.
Prerequisites
None beyond a computer and a Figma account. Figma runs in the browser and as a desktop app. The free Starter plan is enough to learn; students and educators in a structured programme can apply for the free Education plan (see Figma for Education).
Free or paid?
Figma Learn is free. The features it documents depend on your plan: some, such as advanced Dev Mode inspection and team libraries, need a paid or education plan. The documentation usually notes which plans include a feature.
What you can do after
Build tidy, resizable screens with auto layout, create components with variants and properties, set up variables for themes, prototype a flow and prepare a file for handoff.
Common questions
Is it only for designers? No. Developers use it to understand Dev Mode, variables and how Figma properties map to code.
Does it teach design itself? Mostly it teaches the tool. Pair it with resources on visual design, research and accessibility.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
