What it is

FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) is the foundation-level certification from the FinOps Foundation, which is part of the Linux Foundation. It tests whether you understand the FinOps Framework well enough to take part in a FinOps practice: the principles, the personas (engineering, finance, procurement, leadership), the capabilities, the Inform, Optimize and Operate phases, and the terms used on a cloud bill.

The exam, as of October 2026

  • 50 multiple-choice and multiple-response questions in one hour.
  • Pass mark of 75%.
  • Taken online and not proctored.
  • Three attempts within one year of registering.
  • The certification is valid for 24 months.

The published weighting puts most marks on the FinOps lifecycle and the capabilities, with smaller shares on the challenge of cloud, the principles, teams and motivation, and terminology and the cloud bill. The Foundation does not offer official practice exams; its course material on learn.finops.org is the intended preparation. Check the page for the current fee before you register, and ask your employer: many companies pay for it.

Is it worth it?

It is the FinOps credential most often named in job posts, and it gives engineering and finance people a shared vocabulary, which is half of the job. On its own it does not prove you can save money. Pair it with something you built: a cost report from a real or sandbox bill, a tagging policy you enforced, or a rightsizing change with its before and after numbers.

How to prepare

  1. Take the free Introduction to FinOps course on learn.finops.org.
  2. Read the FinOps Framework pages for each capability.
  3. Open a real bill on your cloud (even a student account) and match its columns to the terms you learn.
  4. Book the exam when you can explain each capability with one example from your own bill.

What comes after it

The Foundation also offers FinOps Certified Engineer, FOCUS Analyst, Professional and an AI Value certification, for people who go deeper into engineering, billing data or AI spend.

Best for: students and early-career engineers or analysts who want a recognised first credential in cloud cost.
