What it is

Introduction to FinOps is a free, self-paced course on the FinOps Foundation's training site. The Foundation describes it as a course that gives a basic understanding of FinOps and how to get involved in the FinOps community. It sits at the start of the Foundation's catalogue, before the paid FinOps Certified Practitioner course and exam. The same site also offers a free Introduction to FOCUS course on the common billing data format.

Why start here

FinOps is easy to misunderstand as "cutting cloud costs". The course frames it the way practitioners do: a practice where engineering, finance and the business make decisions about cloud spend together, using timely data, and where the goal is value for money rather than the smallest bill. Getting that framing right early stops you from treating every cost conversation as a cut.

What you will learn

  • What FinOps is and why the variable, pay-as-you-go cloud model needs it.
  • The people involved: engineers, finance, procurement and leadership, and what each needs.
  • The shape of the FinOps Framework: principles, phases (Inform, Optimize, Operate), domains and capabilities.
  • How the FinOps Foundation community works: working groups, meetups and resources.

How to use it well

Keep your own cloud bill open while you go through it, even if it is a student account with a few dollars of spend. Each time the course names an idea such as allocation, a budget or a commitment, find where it would show on your bill. Then read the FinOps Framework pages for the capabilities that interested you most.

Prerequisites and time

No prior FinOps knowledge is needed. Knowing roughly how a cloud provider charges (per hour, per GB, per request) helps. Plan a few hours. You need a free account on learn.finops.org to enrol.

Free or paid

The course is free. The certifications that follow it are paid, and optional.

Best for: students, engineers and finance people who have heard the word FinOps and want a clear first picture before committing time to it.
