What it is
The Fulbright Foreign Student Program brings graduate students, young professionals and artists from abroad to study and research in the United States. It is sponsored by the US Department of State. As of 2026-09 the official site says it operates in more than 160 countries and that about 4,000 foreign students receive Fulbright scholarships each year.
How it works
Applications and selection are run by the binational Fulbright commission or foundation in your country, or by the US embassy where there is no commission. That is why eligibility, the application form, benefits and deadlines vary widely from one country to another. The official site has a country selector that takes you to the right page. Deadlines are often more than a year before the programme would start, and many countries require an English test and sometimes the GRE as part of the process.
What it covers
Coverage depends on your country's programme, and the official site does not give one global list, so read your country page. Do not rely on descriptions of the programme for American students, which is a different scheme. Many Fulbright awards for foreign students are tied to a commitment to return home after the programme under US exchange visitor rules, so read the conditions carefully.
How to prepare a strong application
- Read your country page completely, then attend an information session if offered.
- Build a clear study plan: what you will study, why in the United States, and how it serves your career and your home country.
- Ask referees early, as for university applications.
- Prepare for an interview with the selection committee.
Is it worth it?
For eligible students, yes: it is one of the few large scholarships for US masters study, with strong support and a lasting network. It is highly competitive, and the return commitment may not suit someone planning to stay in the United States.
Free or paid
Applying is free. No one can sell you a Fulbright or promise selection; only the commission or embassy selects.
Common questions
Can I apply from a country other than my own? Usually you apply in your country of citizenship; check your country page.
