What the path covers
GitHub Copilot Fundamentals Part 1 of 2 is a free learning path on Microsoft Learn. It has nine modules:
- Responsible AI with GitHub Copilot.
- Introduction to GitHub Copilot.
- Introduction to prompt engineering with GitHub Copilot.
- Introduction to Copilot Spaces.
- Using advanced GitHub Copilot features, with a Python application.
- GitHub Copilot across environments: the IDE, chat, GitHub.com, the command line and the GitHub Copilot app.
- Management and customisation considerations with GitHub Copilot.
- Developer use cases for AI with GitHub Copilot, including its limitations.
- Developing unit tests using GitHub Copilot tools in Visual Studio Code.
Microsoft lists it for beginner and intermediate learners, with a basic understanding of GitHub fundamentals as the prerequisite.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, particularly the first, third and last modules. The responsible AI module is a good grounding in the risks this roadmap takes seriously. The prompt engineering module turns vague requests into precise ones. The unit testing module is hands-on practice in the habit that matters most when AI writes code: tests that check behaviour. Some modules, such as management and customisation, are aimed at organisations rolling Copilot out; skim those if you are a student.
Free, with a badge
The path is free, and Microsoft Learn records completed modules on your profile. That is a small signal on its own; what matters more is what you build afterwards.
What you can do after it
- Explain Copilot's plans, surfaces and limitations.
- Write clearer prompts for code, with context and examples.
- Use Copilot in the editor, in chat, on GitHub.com and in the terminal.
- Generate unit tests with Copilot and judge whether they test anything.
How it fits the Coding with AI tools roadmap
The Copilot edition of the Sefism roadmap uses this path in the first stage, for the responsible AI and introduction modules, and again as a deeper option in the prompting stage. The roadmap then goes further on review, debugging, agent safety and keeping your own skills.
Common questions
Is there a part two? Yes, the title says part one of two; search Microsoft Learn for the second part once you finish.
Do I need a paid Copilot plan? No. Copilot Free is enough for most exercises, though limits may apply.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
