What it proves

Associate Cloud Engineer shows that you can deploy and secure applications, services and infrastructure on Google Cloud, monitor operations across projects and maintain solutions. It is Google Cloud's hands-on associate certification and covers the work of a junior cloud engineer: projects and billing, IAM and service accounts, Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine and Cloud Run, Cloud Storage and databases, VPC networking and load balancing, and monitoring and logging.

Who it is for

Google recommends at least six months of hands-on experience with Google Cloud. There are no formal prerequisites, and the foundational Cloud Digital Leader is optional. For a cloud engineering learner, it is the right target once you have built identity, compute, storage and networking on Google Cloud yourself.

The exam

As listed on the official page in September 2026, the standard exam is 2 hours with 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, costs 125 USD and can be taken online with a remote proctor or at a test centre, in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. Google notes the exam was updated to reflect recent product renaming, so study from the current exam guide.

What to study, and in what order

  1. Read the current exam guide and list the sections and their topics.
  2. Follow the free Associate Cloud Engineer learning path on Google Skills (formerly Google Cloud Skills Boost), doing every lab.
  3. Build on your own project with the Free Trial: create projects and budgets, grant predefined IAM roles to groups and service accounts, build a custom VPC with firewall rules and Cloud NAT, run a managed instance group behind a load balancer, deploy to Cloud Run, and set up Cloud Monitoring alerts. Do each step with gcloud as well as the console.
  4. Use the sample questions and revise weak areas in the Google Cloud documentation.

Cost and validity

The standard exam is 125 USD and the certification is valid for three years. Renewal options include a shorter renewal exam and, from 2026, designated courses or skill badges on Google Skills.

What to do after it

Publish a project that uses the exam's core services, written in Terraform, with a diagram and a cost report. Once you have designed real systems, the Professional Cloud Architect is the natural next certification.

Common questions

Do I need Cloud Digital Leader first? No.

How important is gcloud? Very. Many tasks in the exam guide are about configuring resources, and knowing the commands makes both the exam and the job easier.
