What it is
The Cloud Billing documentation is Google Cloud's official reference for how billing accounts, projects and costs work, and for the tools to analyse and control them. It lives at docs.cloud.google.com alongside the rest of the Google Cloud docs.
The pages that matter most for FinOps
- Billing reports and cost breakdown: cost by project, service, SKU, region and label, with forecasts.
- Budgets and alerts: thresholds on actual or forecasted spend. An alerts-only budget does not cap spending; Pub/Sub programmatic notifications let you automate a response. Alerts can arrive hours after usage.
- Cost anomalies: Google Cloud detects spikes against your historical pattern automatically, emails billing admins by default and shows a root cause panel by service, region and SKU. You can tune the thresholds.
- Billing export to BigQuery: standard usage cost, detailed usage cost (resource level), pricing data, CUD metadata and a FOCUS usage cost dataset (preview as of October 2026). Enable it early: single-region datasets have no backfill.
- Committed use discounts: resource-based commitments for Compute Engine and spend-based commitments, including compute flexible commitments that cover Compute Engine, GKE and Cloud Run.
- FinOps hub: a dashboard of realised savings, active recommendations, a FinOps score and wasted usage, built from Cloud Billing and Recommender data.
- GKE cost allocation: cluster cost split by namespace and Kubernetes label in the detailed BigQuery export (Standard clusters).
Why read the docs
Google Cloud has reshaped its discount and billing features recently (spend-based CUDs, the FinOps hub, FOCUS export, AI-specific early anomalies), and the docs are where current names and limits are. They also explain the details reports depend on, such as which export has resource-level data.
How to use it well
Turn on the BigQuery billing export first, even in a learning project, then work through reports, labels and budgets with real numbers. BigQuery has a free tier for small queries; check the BigQuery pricing page before running large ones.
Best for: anyone learning FinOps on Google Cloud.
