Google Cloud Digital Leader

What it proves

Cloud Digital Leader shows that you understand cloud computing basics and how Google Cloud products and services help organisations reach their goals. It is Google Cloud's foundational certification and is business-focused rather than hands-on: you will not be asked to write gcloud commands or design a network.

Who it is for

Anyone who wants to show cloud literacy on Google Cloud, with or without technical experience. For a cloud engineering learner, it is an optional first step if cloud is completely new. If you have already worked through compute, storage, IAM and networking on Google Cloud, go straight to the Associate Cloud Engineer.

The exam

As listed on the official page in September 2026, the standard exam is 90 minutes with 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions, costs 99 USD and has no prerequisites. It can be taken online with a remote proctor or at a test centre, in several languages. The content areas are digital transformation with Google Cloud, data transformation, innovating with Google Cloud AI, modernising infrastructure and applications, trust and security, and scaling with Google Cloud operations.

What to study, and in what order

1. Read the official exam guide linked from the certification page.
2. Follow the free Cloud Digital Leader learning path on Google Skills (formerly Google Cloud Skills Boost).
3. Open the Google Cloud console with the Free Trial and look at the products you study, even though the exam does not require it, so the names mean something.
4. Use the sample questions on the certification page to check your readiness.

Cost and validity

The exam fee is 99 USD and the certification is valid for three years. Google offers a shorter renewal exam, and from 2026 a renewal route through designated courses or skill badges on Google Skills.

What to do after it

Move on to the Associate Cloud Engineer, the hands-on certification junior cloud roles ask for, and pair it with a project: for example a small app on Cloud Run with Cloud SQL, a custom VPC, least-privilege service accounts and a budget. Cloud Digital Leader on its own shows vocabulary, so the next step matters.

Common questions

Will it teach me to use Google Cloud? Not in practice. It explains what products are for; the Associate Cloud Engineer path teaches you to use them.

Is it worth it for a developer? Only as a quick milestone. Most developers get more from going straight to the associate level.
