What it is

The Professional Data Engineer certification from Google Cloud tests whether you can design, build, secure and operate data processing systems on Google Cloud: storage choices, batch and streaming pipelines, BigQuery design, data quality and governance, and some machine learning operations.

Exam facts (as of 2026-09, from the official page)

  • Format: 40 to 50 multiple choice and multiple select questions.
  • Time: two hours.
  • Fee: USD 200, plus tax where applicable.
  • Languages: English and Japanese.
  • Delivery: online proctored, or at a test centre.
  • Validity: two years. A shorter renewal exam (one hour, 20 questions, USD 100) is available within the renewal window.
  • Recommended experience: three or more years in industry, including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. There are no formal prerequisites.

What to study

The official exam guide is the syllabus. Expect scenarios choosing between BigQuery, Bigtable, Spanner, Cloud SQL and Cloud Storage; building pipelines with Dataflow (Apache Beam), Pub/Sub, Dataproc and managed Airflow (formerly Cloud Composer); partitioning, clustering and cost control in BigQuery; IAM, encryption and data governance; and monitoring and reliability.

Free and official preparation: the exam guide, the sample questions form, and the Professional Data Engineer learning path on Google Skills (formerly Cloud Skills Boost), whose labs let you practise in temporary projects.

Is it worth your time?

It is a respected certification, but it is pitched above entry level. If you are a student or new to Google Cloud, build a project first: raw data in Cloud Storage, a load into partitioned BigQuery tables, dbt or SQL transformations, and orchestration, all documented on GitHub. Then use the exam to broaden your knowledge. Employers value the project you can explain more than the badge.

Fee and scam warnings

Book only through Google Cloud's official certification site. Brain dumps of exam questions break the exam terms and can lead to revocation. Some regions and programmes offer discounted vouchers; check official Google Cloud channels rather than third-party resellers.

Common questions

Is there an associate-level data certification? Google Cloud's Associate Cloud Engineer covers general Google Cloud skills and is an easier first exam if you want one.

How much does it cost to practise? The BigQuery sandbox and free tier, plus Google Skills labs, let you practise a lot for little or no money. Set budget alerts on your own projects.
