Google Trends

A free Google tool that shows how interest in a search term changes over time and across countries. It will not give you exact search volumes, but it quickly tells you whether a problem is growing, seasonal, fading or confined to one region.

What it shows

Google Trends shows the relative popularity of search terms on Google over time, scaled from 0 to 100, and breaks that interest down by country and region. You can compare up to five terms at once, filter by time range and category, and see related queries that are rising.

Why it matters when you choose a product

Before you build, you want evidence that people are looking for a solution to your problem. Trends answers three useful questions in minutes:

  • Is interest growing, flat or falling? A slow decline over five years is a warning sign.
  • Is it seasonal? A tax tool, a wedding template or an exam app will spike at predictable times, which changes when you should launch.
  • Where are the searchers? If most interest comes from one country, that shapes your pricing, language and payment options.

Its limits

Trends shows relative interest, not absolute numbers. A line at 100 might mean a million searches or a few hundred. For volumes, pair it with a keyword tool (many have free tiers) or with Google Search Console once your site is live. Also, many good niche products have too little search volume to show up at all; that is not proof there is no demand. Customer conversations and communities still matter more.

How to use it well

  1. Enter the words your customer would type, not your product's name. "Invoice template" beats "billing automation platform".
  2. Set the range to five years to see the long trend, then to twelve months to see seasonality.
  3. Compare your term with a known reference term so the scale means something.
  4. Open related queries and note the rising ones: they often name the exact pain.

Common questions

Is it free? Yes, with a Google account or without.

Can it validate an idea on its own? No. It is one signal among several. Real conversations and pre-sales are stronger evidence.
