What it is

A series of eight courses on Coursera, created by Google's career certificates team. It takes a complete beginner through the UX process: empathising with users, defining pain points, generating ideas, creating wireframes, mockups and prototypes, testing designs through usability studies and iterating on feedback. You work on paper and in Figma, and the programme includes design critique and design review activities. Coursera lists it as beginner level with no degree or experience required.

Cost and time (as of 2026-09)

Coursera's page states that in the US and Canada it charges $49 per month after an initial 7-day free trial, with an estimated 6 months at 10 hours a week. Prices differ by country, so check the page in your region. Coursera offers financial aid through an application. You pay for the time you take, so finishing faster costs less, but rushing past exercises wastes the point of paying.

What you build

The course page says you finish with a portfolio of three end-to-end projects. That is its main practical value: a structure that forces you to research, design, test and write up real work.

Is it worth it?

It depends on how you learn.

  • Worth it if you need deadlines, a fixed order, graded work and a sense of progress, and the monthly price is manageable.
  • Not necessary if you are self-directed. Nielsen Norman Group articles, Figma Learn, the Interaction Design Foundation's free articles and this roadmap cover the same ideas at no cost.

Be realistic about outcomes. Coursera publishes career outcome figures and hiring partner claims on the page, but a certificate on its own rarely gets someone hired. Hiring managers look at your case studies: the problem, your research, the decisions and what testing changed. Treat the three projects as a first draft of your portfolio, then improve them or replace them with work on real problems.

Prerequisites

None beyond basic computer skills and time. A Figma account is needed; the free plan is enough, and eligible students can apply for the free Education plan.

What you can do after

Run a small research round, create wireframes and prototypes in Figma, conduct a basic usability study and present a case study. You will still need more practice with visual design, accessibility and design systems.

Common questions

Will it get me a job? No course can promise that. It can give you skills and portfolio material; the job search is still up to your work and applications.

Is it recognised? It is widely known. Its value in hiring depends on the portfolio you build from it.
