GOV.UK Design System
The UK government's public design system: styles, components and patterns for forms, errors, questions and navigation, each documented with when to use it, when not to, and the research behind it. One of the best free examples of a documented design system and of accessible form design.

What it is
The GOV.UK Design System helps teams building UK government services create consistent, accessible services. It publishes styles, reusable components (for forms, navigation, panels, tables and more) and patterns (such as asking for names, dates or addresses, and handling errors). The code is released as GOV.UK Frontend; the site announced version 6.5.0 on 27 August 2026.
Why it is useful outside the UK
You will probably never build a UK government service. You should still study this system, for three reasons:
- Documentation quality. Each component page explains when to use it, when not to use it, how it works, accessibility considerations and research findings. It is a model for writing your own design system documentation.
- Researched patterns. Its form and question patterns have been tested with a very wide range of users, including people with low digital skills and disabilities. They are an excellent reference for forms, error messages and validation.
- Accessibility. It publishes its accessibility strategy and designs components with accessibility in mind from the start.
How to use it
- Before designing a form, read the patterns for the questions you need and the guidance on error messages.
- When writing documentation for your own components, copy the structure of a GOV.UK component page: when to use, when not to use, how it works, research.
- Use it as a counterweight to trendy designs: it shows that plain, clear interfaces work.
Free or paid?
Free. The code is open source.
Limits
Its visual style is deliberately plain and specific to GOV.UK, and it is meant for government services. Do not copy its branding for other products; learn from its guidance and patterns instead.
Time needed
A couple of hours to read the key form patterns and two or three component pages carefully. It is a reference you return to, not a course.
What you can do after
Design forms and error handling based on tested patterns, and write component documentation that tells people how and when to use a component, not just what it looks like.
Common questions
Can I use GOV.UK Frontend in my app? It is built for government services and uses the GOV.UK brand. For other products, use its ideas, not its identity.
Is it better than Material Design? They serve different purposes. Material is a general-purpose platform system; GOV.UK is a focused system for transactional services. Study both.
