Grokking the Object Oriented Design Interview

Walks through classic object oriented design problems such as a parking lot, a library system and a card game, showing how to go from a vague prompt to class diagrams and working interfaces. Covers the round that candidates most often prepare for last and fail first.

The round nobody prepares for

Object oriented design sits awkwardly between coding and system design, and it gets skipped in most preparation plans. Then a candidate who can solve hard graph problems is asked to design a parking lot and produces forty minutes of unstructured talking.

What it teaches

A repeatable method: clarify requirements, identify the actors and objects, define the relationships, write the class interfaces, then handle the awkward edges the interviewer will push on. It works the method through a dozen standard prompts, so you see the same procedure applied rather than a dozen unrelated answers.

How to use it

Do the requirement clarification stage out loud, on a timer, before reading each solution. That first five minutes is most of what is being assessed, and it is the part you can practise without writing any code at all.

Best for: candidates interviewing at companies that run a dedicated design round, and anyone whose interviews include a low level design stage.
