Why it became the standard
Before resources like this, system design preparation meant reading engineering blogs and hoping. This course made the round teachable by doing the same thing for a dozen well known services: state the functional and non functional requirements, estimate the scale, sketch the high level design, then go deep on the two or three pieces where the interesting trade offs live.
What you actually learn
Not the designs. The procedure. A candidate who has memorised the news feed answer falls apart when asked to design something adjacent; a candidate who has internalised the procedure can design anything, because the first ten minutes are the same every time.
How to use it
Cover the solution and attempt the design yourself first, on paper, in forty five minutes. Then read. The gap between your version and theirs is your study plan, and it is usually not the boxes on the diagram but the questions you failed to ask before drawing them.
Best for: any engineer with a system design round on their loop, from mid level upward.
