What it is
Gumroad is a platform for creators to sell digital products directly to their audience: templates, e-books, design assets, courses, memberships and software downloads. You create a product page, upload files or content, set a price (fixed or pay what you want) and share the link. Gumroad handles checkout, delivery and receipts.
Fees (as of 2026-09)
Gumroad's pricing page lists 10% + 50¢ per transaction for sales through your own profile or direct links, and 30% for sales to new customers who find you through Gumroad's Discover marketplace. There is no monthly fee. Payment processing is included in those rates.
Taxes
Gumroad became the merchant of record on 1 January 2025. It now calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST on your sales, so you do not register for them yourself. That is the main reason its fee is higher than a raw processor's.
Getting paid
Gumroad's help centre says it pays by direct bank deposit in many countries and by PayPal elsewhere, with a processing fee on PayPal payouts. It does not pay out to Payoneer or Wise directly. PayPal cannot receive money in some countries, so if neither bank payouts nor PayPal work where you live, Gumroad cannot pay you. Check the "Can I use Gumroad in my country?" article before your first sale.
When it is the right choice
- Your first digital product, where speed matters more than the fee.
- Low volumes, where a no-monthly-fee platform beats a subscription tool.
- You want pay what you want pricing or a simple membership.
When to move on
At higher volumes, 10% adds up, and a lower-fee merchant of record may be worth the extra setup. Software that needs licence key checks may be better served by Lemon Squeezy or Paddle.
Common questions
Do I need a company? Individuals can sell, but local tax on your own income is still your responsibility.
Will Discover bring me buyers? Sometimes, but plan on bringing your own audience. Treat Discover sales as a bonus with a higher fee.
