Hacker News

A link aggregator where the comments are frequently more valuable than the article, often including someone who built the thing being discussed. Also the monthly hiring threads, which are a genuinely good job source.

What it is

A news aggregator for technology, run by Y Combinator, with a comment culture that at its best is very good and a moderation policy that keeps discussion mostly substantive.

What to actually use it for

The comments. On a technical post there is often someone who worked on the system being described, correcting or expanding the article, and that context is not available anywhere else. The monthly Who Is Hiring thread is also one of the better sources of engineering roles, because companies post directly and describe the actual work.

The failure mode

It is an excellent way to spend two hours learning nothing. The signal is real and it is diluted by a large amount of confident argument about topics nobody in the thread has direct experience of.

Best for: staying broadly aware of the industry, and the hiring threads, in bounded doses.
