What it is
HeyGen makes avatar videos. You choose a stock avatar or create a custom one from a recording, type or upload a script, and the avatar speaks it with matching lip movements. HeyGen says its lip-sync works across 175+ languages and dialects, and it highlights character consistency: the same avatar looks the same across angles, expressions and videos. It also offers video translation and real-time interactive avatars.
Where avatar video fits
Avatar videos suit work where a presenter explains something and nobody is claiming a personal experience:
- training and onboarding series
- product walkthroughs and FAQs
- the same explainer in several languages
- regular internal or customer updates
They do not suit fake testimonials or UGC-style ads that pretend an AI person is a real customer. That is misleading, and platforms and advertising rules treat it seriously.
Consent
A custom avatar copies a real person's face and voice. HeyGen's privacy policy explains that where it processes biometric data to create an avatar, it relies on the person's explicit consent, collected during the avatar creation process. For client work, also keep your own written consent from the person: what will be made, where it will be used, for how long and how to withdraw. Never build an avatar of someone from public videos without their agreement.
How to use it well
- Write for the ear: short sentences, clear structure, one idea per scene.
- Add real visuals around the avatar, such as screen recordings, product shots and captions, so the video is not just a talking head.
- Check pronunciation of names and local words in every language version, ideally with a native speaker.
- Label avatar content where platform rules require it.
Limits to know
Plans, minutes and features change often, and some features sit on higher tiers. Check current terms for commercial use and for what the platform forbids before starting client work.
