What it is
A hosting platform for open machine learning models and datasets, with model cards, usage examples, interactive demos and the libraries to run everything locally or on your own infrastructure.
When you need it
The moment a hosted API stops being the right answer. That happens for cost at volume, for data that cannot leave your network, for latency, or for tasks where a small specialised model beats a large general one. All of those routes lead here.
How to evaluate what you find
Read the model card properly. Licence, training data, intended use and known limitations are all stated there and all of them matter, particularly the licence, which varies far more than people assume and occasionally forbids the thing you were planning.
Best for: engineers running open models, and anyone whose requirements rule out sending data to a third party.
