What it is
The Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) is a certification from the IAPP, the International Association of Privacy Professionals. The IAPP is best known for privacy certifications such as the CIPP family, and the AIGP extends that into AI governance. It is one of the most recognised AI governance credentials in job postings for AI governance, responsible AI and AI risk roles.
What it covers
According to the IAPP, the credential shows you understand:
- AI systems, use cases and their impacts.
- Responsible AI principles.
- Current and emerging AI laws and frameworks, such as the EU AI Act and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework.
- The AI life cycle and how to manage risk across it.
- How to implement responsible AI governance inside an organisation.
- Emerging and debated governance issues.
The IAPP publishes a Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, which lists exactly what is tested and how much each area weighs. Download the current version before you study: the IAPP updates it as the law moves, and study material based on an older version can be wrong.
Is it worth it?
It depends on where you are. For someone already in privacy, risk, compliance, audit or legal work, it is a sensible way to move towards AI governance, and employers recognise it. For a student with no work experience, it is not a shortcut into a job: a certificate without any governance work to show is weak. Build a portfolio project first (an AI inventory and risk assessment for a sample company), then decide whether the exam is worth the cost for your target employers.
For engineers, it is useful if you want to move into AI risk or responsible AI roles, but your technical skills (evaluation, testing, monitoring) are usually the stronger signal.
How to prepare
Start with the free Body of Knowledge, then read the primary sources it names: the EU AI Act overview, the NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001's structure. The IAPP sells training and study materials, but they are optional.
Free or paid?
Paid. The exam fee is listed on the IAPP store and differs for IAPP members; check the current price there rather than relying on figures quoted elsewhere.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
