What it is

The Business Analysis Standard is a free publication from IIBA, the International Institute of Business Analysis, the professional body behind the BABOK Guide and the ECBA, CCBA and CBAP certifications. IIBA describes it as a simplified foundation: the core ideas of business analysis in an easy-to-follow format, while the BABOK Guide remains the comprehensive reference.

It was first released in 2022 and IIBA has since refined it, with a stronger focus on outcomes and on the agile, hybrid and transformation settings most analysts now work in.

What it covers

  • The core concept model: the six ideas IIBA uses to describe any piece of analysis: change, need, solution, stakeholder, value and context.
  • Six knowledge areas: planning and monitoring the analysis work, elicitation and collaboration, requirements life cycle management, strategy analysis, requirements analysis and design definition, and solution evaluation.
  • 30 task descriptions: short, practical descriptions of what an analyst actually does in each area, presented as task cards.
  • Principles and context: how analysis fits different ways of working, from traditional projects to agile teams.

Is it worth reading as a beginner?

Yes, and it is the right first read. The full BABOK Guide is long and dense, and many newcomers stall in it. The Standard gives you the same structure and vocabulary in a fraction of the pages, which is exactly what you need to understand job postings, talk to working analysts and follow the rest of a business analysis roadmap.

Read it alongside real practice. After each knowledge area, try the matching task on a small real example, such as mapping how a family business takes orders or writing requirements for a society's event sign-up.

Free or paid?

The digital PDF is free. IIBA members download it after logging in; non-members sign up for a free copy through IIBA's registration form. Print and eBook editions are sold separately through the IIBA bookstore.

How it relates to the BABOK Guide and certifications

The Standard is the entry point; the BABOK Guide v3 is the full reference with detailed tasks and techniques. If you plan to sit an IIBA exam, IIBA says to study the relevant exam blueprint and certification handbook rather than relying on the Standard alone.

Common questions

Do I need it to get a BA job? No document gets you a job on its own, but knowing its vocabulary helps you sound like an analyst in conversations and hiring exercises.

How long does it take? A few focused evenings for a first read. Keep it open as a reference while you practise.

Best for: students and career changers who want a clear, free map of what business analysis involves before investing in courses or certifications.
