What it is

The Interaction Design Foundation, now branded IxDF at ixdf.org, is an online design education organisation founded in 2002. Alongside its paid courses, it publishes a large free library. As of 2026-09 its literature page describes 1,760 free articles with 730 videos, plus illustrations and templates, and topic pages that define terms such as usability testing, personas, information architecture and design thinking.

Free versus paid

  • Free: the article library and topic definitions. You can read them without an account.
  • Paid: the IxDF membership, which includes structured courses, master classes, career programmes, certificates and templates. The membership price is shown on the join page and depends on how you are billed; check it there. The site advertises a 14-day money-back period.

For this roadmap, the free library is enough. Consider the membership only if you want structured courses with certificates and have compared it with free and cheaper options.

Why it is worth your time

IxDF articles are written for beginners and usually start with a clear definition, then explain why the idea matters and how to apply it. That makes them a good first stop for a new term, before moving on to research-heavy sources such as Nielsen Norman Group.

How to use it

  • Look up any unfamiliar term from the roadmap, such as "affinity diagram", "card sorting" or "heuristic evaluation", to get a plain-language definition.
  • Read the topic pages on the design process and design thinking in the first stage.
  • Use the career-related articles when you prepare your portfolio and first applications.

Limits

Quality varies across such a large library, and some articles are long and introductory. For specific guidelines backed by studies, pair it with Nielsen Norman Group. For tool skills, use Figma Learn.

What you can do after

Explain the main UX terms and methods clearly, which helps in critiques, case studies and conversations with product managers and developers.

Common questions

Do I need the membership to be taken seriously? No. Hiring managers look at your portfolio and case studies, not at which platform you learned from.

Is it the same as the Interaction Design Foundation encyclopedia? The foundation has long published free reference material; the current library at ixdf.org/literature is the place to find it.
