What it is

The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB) is a non-profit that defines testing syllabi and certifications used worldwide. The Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) is its entry-level certificate, and version 4.0 of the syllabus is current, with the official page listing version 4.0.1.

What the syllabus covers

Testing fundamentals and principles, testing throughout the software development life cycle (including agile and DevOps contexts), static testing such as reviews, test analysis and design techniques (equivalence partitioning, boundary value analysis, decision tables, state transition testing, experience-based techniques), test management (planning, estimation, risk, monitoring, defect management) and test tools.

The exam, as of 2026-09

According to the official page: 40 multiple-choice questions, 60 minutes (75 minutes for candidates taking it in a non-native language), and a pass mark of 26 out of 40. ISTQB does not sell exams directly: exams are delivered by listed exam providers and member boards, and the official page states that fees are set locally and no single global price is published. Check your national board's or exam provider's site for the fee in your country.

Free or paid?

The syllabus, sample exams with answers and exam rules are free PDF downloads. The exam is paid. Training courses from accredited providers are optional; many people prepare with the free syllabus and sample exams alone.

Is it worth your time?

The syllabus, yes: it is a precise, well-organised summary of testing vocabulary and techniques, and reading chapters 1, 2 and 4 is worthwhile for anyone entering QA. The certificate depends on your market. Some employers, often service companies, enterprises and regulated industries, list it in job postings; many product companies do not ask for it. It shows you know the vocabulary, not that you can test or automate well, so it complements a portfolio rather than replacing one.

Common questions

Are there prerequisites? None are listed on the official page for Foundation Level.

Should I pay for a bootcamp bundled with the exam? Only if you want structured teaching. Be cautious of offers that bundle expensive training with promises of placement.

What comes after Foundation? ISTQB offers advanced and specialist certificates, including test automation and agile tracks, for later in your career.
