What it is

Kenney is a Dutch creator who publishes game assets: 2D sprites and tilesets, 3D models, UI packs, icons, fonts and sound effects. The asset pages list hundreds of packs. According to the Kenney support page, all game assets on the asset pages are public domain licensed (CC0), so you are free to use them in commercial projects, and attribution is not required (though appreciated).

Individual packs are free to download. An optional paid "All-in-1" bundle downloads everything at once with updates; donations are also welcome.

Is it worth using?

Yes, especially for programmers. Two things make Kenney stand out:

  • The licence is as simple as it gets. CC0 removes the risk of a licence problem in a commercial release.
  • Packs share consistent styles, so a platformer pack, its UI pack and its sound pack look and sound like they belong together. Mixing random free assets usually looks messy.

Use Kenney for prototypes, jam games and even commercial releases, then replace assets with your own or commissioned art when the game's identity matters.

How to use it well

  • Pick one style family for the whole game.
  • Keep a credits file anyway. Even when credit is not required, recording the source of every asset is good practice.
  • Tweak colours or combine pieces so your game does not look identical to others using the same pack.

Free vs paid

Free per pack. The All-in-1 bundle is optional.

Common questions

Can I sell a game using Kenney assets? Yes, the CC0 licence allows commercial use.

Can I resell the assets themselves? Check the licence file included with each pack; selling a game is fine, but repackaging assets as your own asset pack is poor form and may confuse buyers.

Where it fits in the Sefism roadmap

Kenney is the practice pick for the art and audio stage and a tool for the whole roadmap. Use it from your first clone onwards so your prototypes look tidy without art work slowing you down, and keep using it for jams. Later, when a game is heading to Steam, decide whether its style is distinctive enough or whether to replace key assets with your own or commissioned art.
