Loom

Records your screen, voice and optionally your face, then gives you a link to share. For freelancers it is a quick way to walk a client through a delivery, explain a decision or send an update across time zones without scheduling a call. The free plan is enough for short client updates.

What it does

Loom records your screen, your voice and, if you like, a small video of your face, and turns the recording into a link the other person can watch in a browser. Viewers can react and comment. It is now part of Atlassian.

Free versus paid (as of 2026-09)

Loom's pricing page lists a free Starter plan with 25 videos and 5-minute screen recordings per person. Paid plans are listed at $18 per user per month (Business) and $24 per user per month (Business + AI), with savings for annual billing. Short client walkthroughs fit well within the free limits if you delete old videos.

Why freelancers use it

  • Deliveries: a three-minute walkthrough of a finished site or script shows the client what you built and how to use it, and cuts follow-up questions.
  • Time zones: a freelancer in Manila or Lagos and a client in California may share an hour of working time. A recorded update replaces a call that is hard to schedule.
  • Decisions and trade-offs: explaining why you chose one approach, with the screen in front of you, is clearer than a long message.
  • Proposals and briefs: a short, specific video that looks at the client's actual site or problem can stand out, as long as it is personal rather than a generic pitch.

Using it well with platforms

On Upwork and Fiverr, keep the official record on the platform: share the Loom link inside the platform's messages and deliver files through Submit Work or the order page. Do not use a video to move the conversation or contact details off the platform before a contract or order exists.

Tips

  1. Keep videos under three minutes and say the main point in the first 20 seconds.
  2. Close private tabs and notifications before recording.
  3. Follow each video with a short written summary, because not everyone watches.
  4. Never record a client's passwords or private data.

Common questions

Do clients need an account to watch? Viewers can generally watch from the link in a browser.

Alternatives? Any screen recorder that produces a shareable link works; the habit of short recorded updates is what matters.
