What it is
Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die is a book by brothers Chip Heath and Dan Heath, published by Random House. It asks why some ideas, from urban legends to famous ad campaigns, stick in people's minds while carefully crafted messages are forgotten. Their answer is six principles, often remembered as SUCCESs:
- Simple: find the core of the idea and say it in a way people can hold.
- Unexpected: break a pattern to grab attention, then keep it with curiosity.
- Concrete: use specific images and examples rather than abstractions.
- Credible: give people a reason to believe, ideally one they can check themselves.
- Emotional: make people care, usually about one person rather than statistics.
- Stories: show the idea in action so people can picture it.
Why it matters for AI creative work
AI tools make it cheap to produce visuals; they do not decide what the visual should say. The hardest part of an ad, explainer or thumbnail is the idea and the hook, and this book is about exactly that. Each principle maps onto everyday creative decisions:
- Unexpected is the job of a hook in the first second of a video, or the one surprising element in a thumbnail.
- Concrete pushes you to show a real moment, such as a cracked phone screen or a messy desk, not a vague "productivity" image.
- Credible is why before-and-after shots and proof points work.
- Stories give a 15-second ad its shape: problem, product, proof, action.
How to read it
- Read one chapter, then rewrite the hook or headline of one of your portfolio pieces using it.
- Keep a swipe file of real ads and label which principles each uses.
- Use the principles to write case notes and offers that clients remember.
Limits to know
It is about ideas, not visual craft. Pair it with design and editing resources for the how.
Who it suits
Anyone who makes ads, explainers or thumbnails and wants their work to be remembered, not just seen.
